Our place, Noida Battery, is tucked away in Sector 22. We’ve been dealing with all kinds of batteries, mostly for cars and inverters, for a long time now. The shop is filled with the smell of lead and acid, and we usually have a few units on the floor being charged up. It’s not the cleanest job, and our clothes often have little holes from the battery water, but we don't mind much. People usually show up when their car won't start or when the power goes out and their backup fails. We spend our time testing voltages and cleaning terminals to see if a battery can be saved or if it’s finally dead. Sector 22 is a busy residential area, so we get a lot of neighbors dropping by with their problems. We carry the heavy batteries out to the vehicles ourselves, which keeps us strong. There’s a small desk in the corner where we keep the warranty papers and a pen that barely works. We don't do much advertising; the word just travels from one person to another when they get stuck on the road. Sometimes we have to go out to someone’s house if they can’t bring the battery to us. It’s just us doing what we know how to do, day after day. We keep some scrap in the back and wait for the recycling truck to come by every week. It is honest work and it keeps us connected to the neighborhood.
