Down in Palika Bazar at shop 279, things get pretty loud during the afternoons. If you’ve been to Connaught Place, you know how it is. Venus Bags is just one of those spots tucked away in the underground corridors where the air conditioning works hard to keep the heat out. We spend all day surrounded by bags and the hum of the market. It’s not fancy, just a shop with shelves full of whatever we’ve got in stock that week. People walk past all day long, some looking for a bargain and others just trying to find their way out of the maze. The lighting is that bright yellow kind you get in Palika. We have been in this specific spot for a good bit of time now. You learn to recognize the regular faces and the other shopkeepers nearby. It’s a small space, so things can get a bit crowded when a few people come in at once. There’s always someone asking for directions to the different exits. We just stay here and keep things moving. The floor is that old tile and the walls are covered in merchandise. It’s just how it goes in a place like this. Connaught Place is always changing above us, but down here in shop 279, it feels like its own world. We keep the shutters up from morning until the market closes late. It is a lot of standing and talking to folks who wander in.
