Our shop, Shiv Parvati Gems & Jewellers Private Limited, is tucked away at U-119 on the third floor. Being on the top floor means we get a bit more peace than the shops right on the street, but it also means a lot of climbing if the power goes out. We deal with gems mostly. You’d be surprised how much time you can spend just staring at one little stone trying to see if it’s got a crack or some other tiny flaw. It gets a bit lonely up here sometimes, so we usually have the radio playing in the background or just talk to the delivery guys when they bring the mail. The space isn't huge, just enough for a couple of desks and some glass cases that we try to keep clean. The glass always gets fingerprints on it no matter how many times we wipe it down with a cloth. We’ve got a small electric kettle in the corner for making tea because you can't really work through a Delhi afternoon without a hot cup of chai. People find their way up here eventually if they’re looking for something specific. We don't have a big sign outside or anything like that, just the door and our daily work. It’s a bit of a trek up the stairs but we’ve got some good pieces to show for the effort. We just keep our heads down and do the daily tasks of sorting and checking stones one by one until it's time to head home.
