If you walk past Jubilee Hall on Mall Road, you'll find us tucked away nearby. The Institute Of Genomics And Integrative has been in this spot for a bit, and it’s usually pretty quiet inside compared to the main road. We spend most of our time looking at data and running tests in the lab. It isn't the kind of place with a lot of shiny signs or decorations on the walls. Mostly, there are just papers piled up and people staring at monitors or microscopes. We deal with complicated biological stuff, but we try to keep the atmosphere here pretty relaxed. We aren't a big corporate office with suits and ties; most of us just wear what's comfortable for a long day of research. Sometimes the equipment gets finicky, and we have to spend the whole morning just getting things calibrated right. It’s slow work and you need a lot of patience to do it. The neighborhood is nice, especially in the mornings before the crowds arrive. We don’t really do big announcements or fancy events. People often ask what exactly we do, and it’s hard to explain without getting into a lot of jargon, so we usually just say we study genes. It is fascinating work even if the days are long and the results take forever to show up. We just keep going.
