Working in the Tis Hazari Civil Wings Courts is something else entirely. Gunjan Kathpalia is situated right in the thick of it all. If you have ever been to the courts in Delhi, you know how it is. There are people everywhere, stacks of paper tied with red string, and a lot of shouting and rushing around the hallways. Our spot is a bit of a haven from that, though it is still pretty cramped with all the documents we have to keep for our records. We spend most of the day dealing with the legal atmosphere, which can be exhausting but it is what we know. The fans overhead just sort of move the warm air around while we type things up or look through old files. You can smell the ink and the old paper as soon as you walk into the wing. Lunch is usually something quick from one of the vendors outside the gates. We do not have much time for fancy breaks because there is always another deadline or a person waiting for help. It is a very functional way to work. We are not here to look pretty; we are here to handle the paperwork that keeps everything moving. The chairs are old and the desks are cluttered, but every single item has a purpose. It is a real place where real things happen every day, right in the heart of the legal system.
