Our place is BF 119 in Shalimar Bagh, which is a fairly quiet neighborhood compared to some other parts of Delhi. Being in the BF unit means we are a bit below the street level, so it stays a little cooler during those long July afternoons. We don't have big signs out front or anything like that. Most of the time, it is just us sitting around the main table with a couple of lamps turned on so we can see what we are doing with the gems. The lighting in here has to be just right, or you can’t see the true colors of the stones. We usually have the radio playing softly in the background to fill the silence. It’s a simple setup with a few chairs and some heavy safes for keeping everything secure at night. Shalimar Bagh has a nice rhythm to it, and we see the same people walking their dogs or heading to the shops every morning when we arrive. Sometimes we spend hours just cleaning the glass cases or organizing the small plastic bags we use for the inventory. It is not the kind of job where things happen fast, so you have to have a bit of patience. We usually eat lunch together at the desk, talking about everything except work for a little while before getting back to the sorting and the paperwork that never seems to end.
