Central Avenue Road is never really quiet. There are cars and bikes honking all day long, and the sound comes right through the windows here at Glaxo Smith Kline Pharma. Our office isn’t much to look at, just a few desks pushed together and stacks of files that seem to grow every week. We spend a lot of time on the phone or typing stuff into old computers that take forever to start up. The air conditioner makes a weird rattling sound if we leave it on too long, so we usually just keep the windows shut to block out the street noise. Being on Central Avenue Road means we see a lot of people passing by, but most of them are in a hurry. We handle the distribution and the paperwork for the medicines. It’s not exciting work, but it keeps us busy from morning until late evening. Sometimes the delivery trucks get stuck in the traffic outside, and we have to wait around for hours. We drink a lot of tea to stay awake during the slow afternoons. The walls are a pale grey color and there are no decorations, just a calendar from last year that nobody bothered to take down. It’s a practical place for what we do. We know the shopkeepers nearby, and sometimes we grab a snack from the stall on the corner when the work gets to be too much.
