You will find V.P. Bedekar & Sons P. Ltd. over at 56, Tatya Gharpure Path. The area is actually called Bedekar Masalewale Chowk in Girgaum, which tells you we have been around for a very long time. It’s an old part of the city. The building is traditional and it always smells like spices near our entrance. It’s a familiar smell to everyone who lives nearby. We have many generations of the family involved, and the office reflects that. There are old photos on the walls and heavy wooden desks. It’s not a modern glass office. We have a lot of registers and jars everywhere. Sometimes the phone rings off the hook, and other times it's quiet enough to hear the traffic outside on the path. We spend our time checking the stock and talking to suppliers. Girgaum is a crowded place, and our corner is no different. People often stop by just to say hello because they’ve known us since they were kids. We don't really do much in terms of fancy marketing. We just focus on the spices and making sure everything is handled correctly. It’s a lot of work, and the days are long, but this is what we know. We just keep the tradition going in our own quiet way in the middle of the busy chowk. It is just a regular life for us, surrounded by jars and sacks of ingredients.
