We’ve been here at the Lal Baug Bombay Gas Compound for a while now. It’s a busy spot, mostly because of where we are in the heart of the city. Being part of Volkswagen Downtown means we see a lot of people coming through every day. Some are just looking, others are worried about a noise their car is making. The compound itself has that old industrial feel to it, which is actually kind of nice when you’re working on cars all day. It gets hot in the afternoons, especially when the sun hits the metal roofs, but we just keep at it. Usually, the mornings are the quietest time to get things organized before the rush starts. You can hear the traffic outside constantly, but inside the shop, it’s mostly the sound of tools and people talking about engine parts. We don't really have a fancy way of doing things, we just show up and handle whatever car is in front of us. Most of the guys here have been around for years and know the neighborhood well. It’s funny how you get used to the smell of oil and the sound of the city after a few months. We spend a lot of time on our feet, moving between the showroom and the back where the real work happens. It’s not a quiet job, but it’s what we do here in Lal Baug. Sometimes we take a break and just watch the street.
