If you walk down toward Darukhana near the old Quay Street, you will find where we spend our days. We are United Floors Pvt. Ltd., located right across from the Sai Baba Mandir. It is an interesting spot to work because the Britania Biscuit Co. is right behind our building. On good days, the smell of baking biscuits drifts over, which is a nice change from the usual industrial scents of the docks. This part of the city is very rugged and full of history. Our space is packed with flooring samples and crates of heavy materials. It is not the cleanest environment, but this is where the actual work happens. We spend our time moving heavy loads and talking to contractors who travel in from all parts of Mumbai. The temple across the street is a great landmark because people often get turned around in the narrow lanes of Darukhana. We have a small crew here. Most of us have been handling flooring materials for a long time, so we can tell the quality just by the weight. We do not bother with fancy showroom displays, we just keep the actual products stacked up and ready to go. It is a practical setup for practical people. When the workday ends, we see the evening crowds gathering at the temple before we head home. It is a busy, noisy, and honest corner of the city, and we have been here for years.
