If you come down to Jawahar Nagar in Goregaon West early enough, you’ll see us unloading the trucks at Plot No 265. It’s usually still dark when the first bags of onions and potatoes arrive. We’ve been operating this way for a long time now. The ground is always a bit dusty from the dirt on the vegetables, and there is a lot of shouting back and forth to get the crates moved quickly. It isn't a clean job by any means. Your hands get stained and the smell of raw onions stays on your clothes all day. We deal with a lot of local vendors who come to pick up their daily stock before the sun gets too high. There is a lot of traffic on Nagdevi road and sometimes the delivery trucks get stuck for an hour just trying to reach us. It can be frustrating but that is just how it is around here. We don't have a website or fancy business cards, we just have the produce and the scales. Most of our day is spent checking the quality of what comes in from the farms. If the potatoes are too small or the onions are starting to sprout, we have to sort them out manually. It’s heavy lifting work, honestly. My back usually aches by the time we close up in the evening. But we know the market well and the people in the colony know where to find us when they need a bulk order. It's hard work but it pays the bills for the family.
