Sangeeta Khanna

I am Sangeeta Khanna and this is where I work, at 887 Santacruz West. It’s in Himmat Nagar, on the ground floor of the New India Building. We are very near Nanavati Hospital. You can see the ambulances and the people visiting the hospital all day long from the window. Being on the ground floor means we see everything that happens on the street. The building is called New India Building but it has been around for a long time. The walls inside are a bit damp during the rainy season, which is just part of living in Mumbai. My space isn't very large. It’s mostly filled with my things and some old furniture that I've had for years. It feels very lived-in and comfortable. There is a window that looks out towards the street but I usually keep the curtains half-drawn because of the dust from the traffic. The fan stays on pretty much all the time to keep the air moving. People often stop by just to ask for directions to Nanavati because we are so close and recognizable. I don’t mind helping them. It’s a busy, cramped kind of life here in Himmat Nagar, but it’s where the business is. I’ve got my papers and my tea and that’s enough to get through the day. The New India Building has its quirks, like the plumbing that rattles every time someone upstairs uses it, but we just get through the day. It’s just a normal office.
