Sadhu Kamal Eye Hospital

I'm sitting here at the desk at Sadhu Kamal Eye Hospital in Mumbai Central. It’s always noisy outside on Lamington Road. You know how it is in this part of the city, there’s never a quiet moment with all the traffic and people moving around the Navjivan Society area. We spend most of our mornings just getting things ready for the folks who come in to get their eyes checked. Some of them have been coming here for years, while others just stumble in because they’re having trouble seeing the signs on the street. It’s not a fancy place, but we keep the floors swept and the chairs lined up for whoever shows up. Sometimes the machines act up or the power flickers, which is just part of living in Mumbai. We don’t really have a big team, just a few of us making sure people get their numbers checked and their prescriptions filled out right. It’s a lot of paperwork and squinting at charts. By the time the sun starts to go down over the buildings, we’re usually pretty tired. My coffee always gets cold before I can finish it because someone always needs something right then. It is just the way things go here. We see all kinds of people, from shopkeepers nearby to retirees who live in the society. It’s a regular job, and we just try to get through the daily list of patients without too much fuss.
