Down in Goregaon East, specifically in Appaji Rao Lane, you’ll find where we work at Rashmi Food. It’s tucked away in C T Street, F/C-19. It’s not the easiest place to find if you aren't looking for it. The lane is narrow and there are always scooters parked everywhere. Inside, it’s always warm because of the stoves and the machines running. We spend a lot of time preparing different food items. There’s always a smell of something being cooked or packaged. We use a lot of local ingredients that come in every few days. The floors are tiled and we spend a lot of time scrubbing them down at the end of the shift. It’s physical work. Your back starts to ache after standing for eight hours, but that’s just part of it. We have a small staff and most of us have been here for years. We talk about our families while we work. The lighting isn't great, but we know where everything is kept even in the dark. We don’t have a big marketing department or anything. We just make the food and get it out to the people who buy it. Sometimes the delivery trucks have a hard time navigating the lane, which causes a bit of a stir with the neighbors. We just try to stay quiet and do our jobs. It’s a simple setup, nothing like those big factories you see on TV.
