Running a shop like Mukesh Hardware & Sanitary in a place like Prabhadevi keeps you on your toes. We are tucked away in Shop No 11 at Wadachi Chawl, which is a busy little corner on N M Joshi Marg. Being near Deepak Cinema means there is always someone walking past, even late into the evening. The shop is full of pipes, taps, and all sorts of hardware stuff piled up to the ceiling. It’s a bit cramped inside, but we know exactly where every bolt and washer is kept. Mumbai gets so humid, especially in these narrow lanes, so we usually have the fan going full blast. People from the chawl come in for small repairs, and sometimes builders stop by for bigger sanitary parts. We’ve been at this spot for years, watching the traffic on N M Joshi Marg get heavier every year. It’s not a fancy showroom with glass doors. It’s just a regular hardware store where the floor gets a bit dusty from the cement bags and the metal pipes. We open up early in the morning when the tea stalls nearby start their stoves. Working here means talking to a lot of different people every day. Sometimes the rain leaks a bit near the front, but we just move the stock back and keep going.
