Our yard is right on the Airport Service Road, just off the Western Express Highway in Vile Parle East. It is a very loud spot to work because of the planes taking off nearby and the constant highway traffic. We have huge blocks and slabs of marble just sitting out in the open air. They get covered in a thick layer of dust from the highway, so we have to wash them down with a hose whenever a customer wants to see the actual colors. It is a big space but it often feels small when we get a new shipment of stone from the docks. We have to use cranes to move the really heavy stuff around. It can be dangerous if you aren't paying close attention to what you are doing. Most of our day is spent walking around the yard with people who are looking for the right stone for their new houses. We show them the different veins and marks that occur naturally in the marble. Some people want it to look perfect, but we tell them stone is a natural product and has its own little flaws. The sun beats down on us all day out there in the yard. We have a small wooden cabin with a desk where we handle the bills. It isn't fancy at all. We just focus on getting the slabs loaded onto the trucks without cracking. It is a lot of pressure because the marble is quite expensive.
