Marble House

Working at Plot No-4 in Bharat Compound can be a bit of a squeeze. We are right opposite the Pravashi Industrial Estate on G.M. Link Road in Goregaon East. If you know Mumbai, you know how the traffic is on the main road out there. It’s loud and it never really stops. Here at Marble House, we are surrounded by other workshops and small factories. It’s an industrial vibe, nothing like the shiny malls you see elsewhere. Our compound stays busy with trucks coming in and out all day long. We spend a lot of time just managing the space because marble takes up a lot of room and you can't just throw it anywhere. The floor is usually covered in a bit of white dust, no matter how much we sweep. It’s honest work, and it keeps us on our feet. We don't have a fancy showroom with lights; you just see the stone as it is under the regular roof. The guys from the industrial estate across the road often come by for a chat or to complain about the heat. It’s a tight-knit spot despite all the chaos of Goregaon. By the time the sun starts to set over the Link Road, we are usually exhausted. We lock up the gates and join the crowd heading toward the station or the bus stop. It’s just how every day goes for us. No one here cares much about titles; we just get the loading done.
