Hinduja Hospital

Most people just call it V S Marg, so that’s how we usually write the address for Hinduja Hospital here in Mahim. It’s a bit shorter that way. I’ve worked here through a few monsoons now, and the place really feels different when it’s raining outside. You can hear the rain hitting the roof while we’re inside checking the inventory or cleaning the equipment. It’s a big building, and sometimes I still get turned around in the basement levels where the storage is. We don't really do the whole marketing thing. We just have a lot of people who need help, and we try to get to them when we can. The coffee in the canteen isn't the best in Mumbai, but it gets us through the long nights. We talk about regular stuff, like the cricket scores or the price of groceries, while we work. It’s a community, I guess. You see the same faces every morning at the gate. The security guards know everyone by name. It’s a lot of walking, and my feet are usually pretty tired by the time I head home to Mahim station. We don’t have a fancy mission statement on the wall. We just have the work that needs to be done. It’s a practical place, and we try to keep it that way for everyone who walks through the doors. It’s just how we do things here, nothing more and nothing less.
