Malad West is a very busy part of Mumbai. Our clinic is in Hilla Apartment, which is right on Marve Road. It’s shop number 4 on the ground floor, so it’s easy for people to find us, especially since we are right across from the Dena Bank. The traffic on Marve Road never seems to stop. You can hear the buses and the horns all day long. The clinic is small, just a little unit numbered 102. We have a few chairs packed into the waiting area because it gets crowded. It’s a typical Mumbai space where every inch counts. The walls are covered with some old certificates and a clock that’s always a few minutes fast. We see all sorts of people, from office workers to families who have lived in Malad for generations. The mornings are usually the most hectic. We have a small sink in the corner and a cabinet full of supplies. It feels a bit lived-in, but that’s because we are here every day. We don’t bother with fancy decor. People come here because they know us and we are right in the middle of the neighborhood. It’s a bit noisy and a bit cramped, but it’s our spot. We’ve been part of this street for a long time and we know the other shopkeepers around here. There is always a lot of rain in the monsoon, so we have a rack for umbrellas.
