Masjid Bunder Road is always a chaotic place to work. We are at number 379, tucked into a building that has seen better days but still stands strong. The stairs are narrow and we often have to wait for people carrying heavy loads to pass before we can move. Inside our space, it’s mostly desks and stacks of paperwork that never seem to go away. We handle a lot of logistics and talking to people on the phone. The sounds of the trucks and the shouting from the market downstairs never really stop until late at night. We have a small fan that wobbles a bit, but it keeps the air moving. It’s not the kind of place where you’d bring people for a fancy meeting. We just sit here and do the work that needs doing. Sometimes the power flickers, but we just wait a second and carry on. The walls are painted a dull cream color that has faded over the years. We keep a calendar on the wall with lots of scribbles on it. Most of our day is spent tracking things and making sure the numbers match up. It’s a bit of a squeeze when we have extra boxes in the hallway, but we manage. It’s a tough neighborhood for parking, so we usually just walk or take the local train. We have an old kettle in the back for making tea when things get slow. It’s not much, but it’s our spot.
