Amit Textiles is located in the B Wing, 145, in Kalbadevi. If you’ve ever walked through these lanes in Mumbai, you know it’s a world of its own. It’s crowded, narrow, and always moving. We are surrounded by other shops and traders. Our space is filled from floor to ceiling with rolls of cloth. Sometimes it’s hard to find a place to sit down because there’s so much stock. We’ve been in this building for years. The walls are old, and the lift is a bit moody, so most people just take the stairs. It’s a family kind of atmosphere here. We know the other shopkeepers, and we all complain about the same things, like the heat or the traffic. I spend my day talking to suppliers and checking the quality of the fabric that comes in. There’s no marketing team here. We just show the material to whoever walks in. If they like it, they buy it. It’s simple commerce. The floor is wooden and creaks when you walk over it. It’s not a showroom; it’s a workplace. We handle the orders as they come and try to keep things moving. It’s a busy life in a busy market, and we wouldn't have it any other way. The stairs are narrow and we often have to squeeze past people carrying big bundles. That's just how business goes in Kalbadevi.
