Shanti Handicrafts is over at A-46 in Gandhi Nagar. Even though the name "Shanti" means peace, it can get pretty hectic in our workshop when we have a deadline. Gandhi Nagar is a very busy area with lots of small businesses all packed together. Our building is a simple two-story structure where we do all our work. We don't have any corporate slogans or big goals of world domination. We just want to make good products and get them sold. The ground floor is usually where we keep the raw materials, and we do the finishing work upstairs where the light is better. We have a small stove in the corner for making tea and warming up our lunch. It’s a very informal atmosphere here. We don't wear uniforms and we don't have set break times. We just work until we are tired or until the work for the day is finished. Sometimes the neighbor's dog comes in and sits under the table for a while, looking for a scrap of food. It’s that kind of place. We’ve been at A-46 for a long time and we’ve seen a lot of neighbors come and go over the years. We just keep doing what we do best. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s a good one for us. We don't feel the need to be anything other than a small handicraft business.
