Snow White Mushrooms

We've been here in the Kankanady Keteel area for a bit now. Growing mushrooms is a lot of work. You have to keep the temperature right and watch the bags. It’s mostly just us getting our hands dirty every morning. The damp smell of the rooms is something you get used to. People stop by and ask how it's going. It’s not a big fancy place, just a few sheds where we keep things going. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to scramble. That's just how it is here. My brother helps out most days. We pick them when they look ready and get them out the door. It’s quiet work mostly. The humidity is always high inside, makes your clothes feel heavy after a while. We started with just a few racks. Now we have more, but it's still just the same basic process. Nothing fancy or high-tech about it. Just spores, compost, and waiting. We like being in this part of town. It’s easy to find us once you know which turn to take. The bins need cleaning every week. It’s a lot of lifting. We aren't trying to change the world, just making sure the crop is good enough to sell. Some days are better than others, depending on the weather outside. When it rains, it gets a bit muddy near the entrance, but the mushrooms don't mind that much. Kankanady Keteel area is home to us. We’ve been here long enough that the local dogs don’t bark anymore.
