Malwa Rice & General Mills

Malwa Rice & General Mills sits out on Malerkotla Road. It is a busy stretch of tarmac and we see a lot of people passing through every day. The mill has been part of the landscape for years now. Most of the time, it is just a lot of routine. We open the gates early, check the power supply, and start the day. There is always dust in the air, but that is part of the job when you are dealing with rice and general milling. We don’t have fancy lunchrooms or anything like that. We just eat our tiffin where we can find a spot. The Malerkotla Road can be quite loud with the horns and the heavy engines, but inside the mill, the noise of the machinery is even louder. You get used to it after a week or two. We have a few dogs that hang around the yard, keeping an eye on things. It is a simple life here. We don't try to be anything we aren't. We just take the grain that comes in, process it, and send it back out on the trucks. Some days the humidity makes everything feel heavy, and other days the dry wind blows through the open sheds. It’s just us doing the work that needs doing. We’ve seen the seasons change many times from this spot, and we just keep going. It is nothing more than hard work and a bit of luck with the weather.
