B.S. Birdi Engineering

At No. 6655 on Street No. 7 in New Janta Nagar, near Daba Chowk, you will find B.S. Birdi Engineering. It’s a busy neighborhood with a lot of small businesses packed together. Our workshop is one of those places where you can't see the floor for all the parts and scrap we have laying around. We try to keep it tidy, but work gets in the way of cleaning more often than not. The machines we use are old but they are sturdy and do the job better than some of the newer ones we’ve seen. There is usually a layer of fine metal dust on everything, including our eyelashes by the end of the day. We don't have a secretary or anyone to answer the phones, so if it rings, one of us has to wipe our hands on a rag before picking it up. It’s a bit of a struggle during the monsoon when the street outside gets muddy and the dampness gets into the shop. We just put on our boots and keep going. Most of our time is spent bent over a workbench or peering into a machine to see what's wrong. It’s a basic life and we are just people trying to do a decent job with the tools we have, day in and day out. It is better than sitting in an office all day, that is for sure.
