Shyam Genral Store

We've been sitting here in Indira Nagar for a good many years now. It’s just a small place, really, packed with all the things people around here usually need for their kitchens and houses. When we open up the shutters in the morning, the first thing is always getting the milk crates sorted before the early birds start showing up. Some folks have been coming to Shyam Genral Store since they were kids, and now they bring their own children along to buy a piece of candy or a notebook for school. It’s a bit cluttered inside, I’ll admit that. Boxes are stacked wherever they fit because we try to keep a bit of everything on hand. If a neighbor runs out of salt or needs a specific kind of soap, they usually just walk over. We don't do anything fancy with decorations or big signs. The wooden counter has seen better days, but it holds up under the weight of grocery bags. Sometimes the electricity goes off and we just sit outside on a stool for a bit until it comes back. It is just the way things go in this part of Lucknow. We know most people by their names, and we know who prefers which brand of tea. It isn’t a big operation, just a local shop trying to stay stocked up. Dealing with the distributors can be a headache some days, but seeing the familiar faces makes it okay. We just keep doing what we do every day.
