Mayfair General Store

Mayfair General Store is right near the Garbarjhala Market in Aminabad. If you know Lucknow, you know how busy Aminabad Market Road can get on any given day. We are at number 128, and it is usually quite a scene outside with all the rickshaws and shoppers moving around. The store itself is an old-style place. We have been here for many years, through all the different changes in the market area. It is mostly general goods, everything from sewing thread to basic toiletries. The light inside is not the brightest, but we know exactly where every item is hidden on the back shelves. It gets very hot in the afternoons, so we usually have a small table fan blowing right on whoever is sitting at the register. People come here because we have those odd things that the bigger modern stores do not bother to keep. It is loud and chaotic outside our door, but inside it feels a bit more familiar and calm. We do not really do anything special to get new customers, they just come in because they have been coming here for a generation. It is a lot of standing and talking and counting out change. Aminabad is the heart of the city, and being part of it feels right, even if it is exhausting. We just keep the door open and wait for the next person to walk in.
