Hari Om Rice Mills

You can find Hari Om Rice Mills right on Nehru Road. It’s a busy street, and we are right in the thick of it. The mill has been standing here for years, and it’s seen a lot of changes in the neighborhood. We started out small and stayed that way, mostly because we like knowing exactly what is happening on the floor. The building is made of brick and corrugated metal, and it gets quite loud when everything is switched on. We don’t have a lobby or a reception area. If you want to talk to someone, you just walk into the main shed and look for the person who isn’t currently hauling a bag. It’s a very direct way of working. Most of our days are spent checking the grain as it comes off the trucks. We look at the color and the feel of it. There is a lot of manual labor involved, from stacking the bags to sweeping the floors at the end of the shift. We aren’t trying to impress anyone with big words or polished looks. We are just a local mill on Nehru Road trying to keep the machines in good shape. Sometimes the power goes out, and we all just sit around and wait for it to come back, talking about the weather or the price of diesel. It’s a simple life, and we are fine with that.
