Lemon Grass Farmer

Over by A. A. S. College in Adoni, you’ll find us working with lemon grass. Lemon Grass Farmer is more of a description of what we do than just a name. We’ve got the fields nearby and we spend our days tending to the stalks. It’s a nice smell when the wind blows through the crop. We use some of the space near the college grounds for our processing. It’s a simple setup with some drying racks and a few storage sheds. We don't have any big tractors, mostly just doing it the old-fashioned way with hand tools. My wife helps with the bundles and my nephew drives the old truck. Adoni can be very dry, so we spend a lot of time worrying about the water. When the lemon grass is ready, we cut it and get it ready for whoever is buying that season. We don't have a storefront or a logo. If you walk past the college and see a bunch of green grass drying in the sun, that’s probably us. It’s a quiet life, apart from the students walking by and talking. We’ve been doing this for years because it’s what we know. It’s not a fancy business, just farming. We just take it one harvest at a time and hope for good weather to keep the grass growing.
