Our Lady Of The Snows High School

Living and working up here in Kullu, you get used to the cold pretty quickly. Our school is tucked away in the hills, and the view is mostly just more mountains. When winter comes, things get real quiet and we have to make sure the heaters are working properly so the kids can actually hold their pens. It’s a high school, so the students are a bit older and more independent. They come from all over the valley, some walking quite a distance to get here every morning. The building is an old one, with thick walls that help keep some of the chill out. We don't have anything too modern or fancy. It’s just classrooms with wooden desks that have been around longer than most of the teachers. We have a small playground, but it’s often too cold or muddy to use much during the winter months. We spend a lot of time indoors. The staff room is small and usually smells like tea because we’re always drinking it to stay warm. We don't put on a big show for anyone. We’re just here to make sure the local kids get their lessons done so they can move on to whatever comes next for them. Sometimes the snow blocks the paths and we have to wait for things to clear up. It’s a slow life, but we like the peace of the mountains. We just keep the fires going and the books open until the sun sets.
