Salammal Rice Mill

Salammal Rice Mill is situated at 321, Hogenakkal Road. If you walk by, you will definitely hear the sound of the machines running. It is quite loud inside, and we often have to shout to hear each other over the humming. We take the raw paddy and process it right here on the premises. It is a lot of physical labor, lifting the heavy sacks and making sure the equipment is working like it should. The air is often filled with the smell of grain and a bit of dust. We have been on Hogenakkal Road for many years, and most of the farmers around here know the way to our gate. We don't have a fancy office or anything like that. There is just a small corner where we keep the records and a few chairs for people to sit while they wait. The floor is usually covered in a thin layer of husk. We work according to the seasons, so some months are much busier than others. When the harvest comes in, we are working from dawn until well after dark. It is a tough job, but it is what we know how to do. We take care of the machines because if they break, everything stops. It is just a regular mill doing regular work for the community. Most days are long, but we just get on with it without complaining much.
