Fathima Rice

Fathima Rice is tucked away at No::8/26 in Noorullahpet, right on Masjid Street in Ambur. It’s a small storefront where we sell different varieties of rice to the people living nearby. The shop is narrow, so we have to stack the bags high against the walls to make room for customers to stand. You can hear the call to prayer from the masjid nearby several times a day, which marks the rhythm of our work. We usually open up early before the sun gets too high. The floor is swept every morning, but by the evening, there is always a bit of spilled rice near the scales. We use old metal scoops to fill up the smaller bags for people who only want a kilo or two. Sometimes the cat from next door comes in to sleep on a burlap sack, and we just let it be. We don't have a computer here; everything is written down in a long bill book with a blue pen. It’s a friendly place where neighbors stop by to chat about the weather or the price of groceries. We don't do anything special for marketing; we just rely on being here every day for the folks in Noorullahpet. It’s a simple business, and we like it that way because we know everyone who walks through the door.
