Shri Laxmi Engineering Works

Over here at Shastri Nagar, things are mostly about the sound of metal hitting metal. Shri Laxmi Engineering Works is tucked away near Sanicher Ji Ka Dham at Gulab Bhawan. If you walk by, you’ll probably see a few of us covered in grease or sparks flying from the lathe. It is a small shop, but we keep busy with whatever comes through the door. Sometimes it’s a broken part from a farm machine, other times it is something more precise that needs a steady hand. The floor is never really clean, no matter how much we sweep it at the end of the shift. We’ve got a couple of old machines that still work better than the new ones we tried out last year. My father used to say that you can tell a good part by the way it feels in your hand, and I still think he was right. We don’t really do much talking when the machines are running because it’s just too noisy. We just point and nod. It’s a simple life, working with our hands and making sure the measurements are close enough to keep things running. People from all over the colony bring us their problems, and we do what we can with the tools we have. It’s not a shiny place, but it’s our place. We just want to get the job done so we can go home and rest for the next day.
