Out in Kushtagi, we have our place at Plot No. 19-20. It's part of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board land. It’s a large space, which we need for all the granite we keep. Being in an industrial board area means we have plenty of room for the big trucks to turn around. Most days start with the sound of the gates opening and the workers getting the saws ready. The granite comes from the local quarries and it's our job to sort through it. It’s dusty work and very loud when the blades are cutting through the stone. We don't have a fancy showroom. We just have the yard and the sheds where the stone is kept. We spend a lot of time on our feet, going from one pile to another. It's a lot of physical work, lifting and shifting. We aren't a big corporation with lots of rules; we just run the place like a regular workshop. We focus on the stone and making sure the pieces are what the buyers asked for. Sometimes we have tea with the truck drivers while they wait for their loads. It’s a busy place but we try to keep things organized. Kushtagi is a good place for this kind of work. We’ve been here for a while and plan to stay, just doing the work as it comes in.
