Vishwakarma Metal Industry

If you come to 137 N S Road, you have to climb a lot of stairs to find us. We are on the 3rd floor in Room No-22. The lift doesn’t always work, so we end up carrying smaller metal pieces up by hand. Vishwakarma Metal Industry is a tight space with machines taking up most of the room. It’s always humming with the sound of grinders or saws. The windows are covered in a thin layer of grey dust, so the light coming in is always a bit dim. We have a few stools scattered around, but mostly we are standing up. The building is old and the hallways are narrow. You can hear the other businesses through the walls. On N S Road, there is never any peace because of the horns and the traffic below. We spend our time measuring things and cutting them to size. Sometimes the measurements are a bit off, so we have to start over. It’s frustrating, but that’s part of the job. My hands are usually stained with oil or metal shavings. We keep a rag handy to wipe them off before we eat lunch. Lunch is usually brought from home in steel tiffins. We sit by the window and look down at the street while we eat. It’s a busy life in a crowded city. Sometimes the landlord complains about the noise we make upstairs while we are working.
