About The World Of Assam 1860 – Food & Beverages in Kolkata
We’ve been at 12, Pretoria Street for a while now, tucked inside the Aspirations Vintage building. Most days it’s pretty quiet in here, except for when the morning deliveries arrive and we start moving boxes around. The name The World Of Assam 1860 sounds a bit old-fashioned, but that’s just how it is. Our space isn't much to look at, just a lot of shelves and the smell of dried leaves that stays in your clothes long after you go home. Pretoria Street gets a bit busy around lunchtime, so we usually try to get our heavy lifting done before then. People walk past the vintage sign outside and sometimes they poke their heads in to see what we’re doing. It’s mostly just us sitting around the table, checking samples and writing down notes in big ledgers. We don’t have fancy furniture or anything like that. Just some sturdy desks and enough light to see what we're doing with the tea. The air in here always feels a bit heavy with that earthy scent. Sometimes the fans overhead make a clicking noise that we’ve just gotten used to. It’s a practical place for practical work. We spend a lot of time just looking at different batches and figuring out where they need to go next. There’s no big secret to it, just staying on top of the paperwork and making sure the tea stays dry.
