Working at 16, Bonfields Lane means being right in the thick of things in old Calcutta. Narendrapur Tea Co. (P) Ltd. has its home here, and if you know this area, you know how narrow and crowded these streets can get. It is always loud outside with handcarts and people shouting, but inside our office, it feels a bit more settled. We have these high ceilings and old wooden furniture that probably hasn't been moved in decades. There is a lot of history in the walls here, even if the paint is peeling a bit in the corners. We spend our days dealing with invoices and talking to the people who handle the tea chests. It’s a lot of back-and-forth communication. The air feels heavy and humid most of the year, and we keep the fans spinning at full speed. We don't have a modern lobby or a fancy coffee machine; we just drink the tea we work with. Everyone knows everyone else on this lane, so there’s always someone poking their head in to say hello or share some news. It’s a very traditional way of doing business, I suppose. We don't try to change things just for the sake of it. We just show up, do the work, and deal with the chaos of the city every single day. It might not be fancy, but it is exactly where we belong.
