We are tucked away on the first floor of 16 Bonfield Lane. If you know Calcutta, you know this area is legendary for its tea trade and old-fashioned offices. The stairs up to our place are a bit steep and the walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but it feels like home to us. This is where we manage the Narendrapur Chai Bagan unit. There is always a lot going on, from checking production reports to making sure the tea is moving to the right places. The rooms are filled with the scent of dry tea leaves, which is something you never really lose. We have some heavy wooden tables and fans that click a bit as they spin, but they keep the air moving. It’s not a corporate headquarters with glass partitions; it’s a real office where people actually work. We spend a lot of our time on the phone or writing things down in big ledgers. It’s a bit old school, but it works for us. When it rains, you can hear it hitting the old roof quite clearly. We don’t have any fancy brochures or big promises. We just look after our tea garden and the business that comes from it. It’s been our life for a long time now and we just keep at it, through the busy times and the quiet ones.
