Ganapati Stores is on S K Dev Road in Kolkata. If you know this part of the city, you know it’s always moving. We are in the 700002 area, and it’s a lively neighborhood to be in. The shop itself is pretty modest. We have the standard things people look for when they’re cooking at home. I’ve been sitting behind this counter for longer than I can remember sometimes. The ceiling fan hums all day, and we keep the doors open to catch whatever breeze comes off the street. It’s not a polished place. The floor has some scuffs and the shelves are a bit crowded with bags of grains and bottles of oil. But people know where to find things. Whether it’s spices or some soap, we usually have it tucked away somewhere. I talk to the regulars about the local news or the football scores. It’s a very human way to spend the day. Sometimes the rain comes down hard and we have to move everything back from the entrance to keep it dry. It’s just how it is in Kolkata. We don’t do any fancy promotions or advertisements. We just open up, sell what we have, and close when the sun goes down. It’s a straightforward business. We don't try to impress anyone, we just try to have the stuff people need when they walk in through the door. It’s a long day, but it’s our life.
