Fine Dressing is located at 155 R N Tagore Road, in a spot we call F-2. It’s a straightforward kind of place. We don’t have a massive window display or anything like that. When you walk in, you’re mostly seeing the work we’re currently doing. There’s usually a sewing machine going in the corner and someone sitting with a needle and thread near the window to catch the light. R N Tagore Road can be pretty loud with the buses and the horns, but we’ve gotten used to it over the years. We focus on getting the fit right, which means there are always scraps of chalk and measuring tapes lying around. It’s not the tidiest shop you’ll ever see, but we know where everything is. We spend a lot of time talking to people about how a sleeve should fall or where a button should go. Sometimes we run out of a certain color of thread and have to send someone out to find it quickly. It’s a small-scale operation, just a couple of us doing the work day in and day out. We don’t have any grand ideas or a fancy philosophy. We just want to make sure that when someone leaves with a piece of clothing, it actually fits them the way it’s supposed to. Some days we stay late to finish a job, and other days we close early if the power goes out or the street gets flooded.
