We are over here at 16 Canning Street, way up on the third floor. If you know this part of Kolkata, you know how it gets. It is always loud and crowded down on the street level, but up here it’s a bit different. We spend most of our mornings just sorting through things. There are usually tea chests sitting around and papers piled up on the old wooden desks. It is not some fancy modern office with glass walls or anything like that. The ceiling fan hums all day long, trying to push the heavy air around. We have been in this spot for a while now. Some days are just about checking the stock and talking to the people who bring the tea in from the gardens. It gets dusty sometimes. We don't really have a big fancy reception area. If someone stops by, they usually just pull up a plastic chair. It is a lot of work keeping track of everything coming and going. Sometimes the lift in the building doesn't work right, so we end up taking the stairs, which is quite a climb to the third floor. We just keep our heads down and get through the lists. The afternoon sun hits the windows pretty hard. It is just a regular place where we do our business every day. We drink a lot of tea ourselves, mostly just to keep going during the long afternoons. You can hear the traffic from the street below even when the windows are shut tight. It's just how life is in this part of town.
