The office for Pragati Maritime Pvt. Ltd. is tucked away at No. 13/H S. N. Chatterjee Road in Behala. It’s a bit of a walk from the main crossing, but we’ve been here long enough that the rickshaw pullers know the way. Inside, it’s mostly just desks covered in shipping manifests and logs. Maritime work involves a lot of waiting for ships to dock or clear customs, so the phones ring at odd hours of the night. We don't have fancy office furniture or a big lobby. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we are usually too busy with the logistics to worry about that. Sometimes the monsoon rain makes the street outside flood a little, and we have to put bricks down to get to the door without getting our shoes soaked. It’s just part of being in Behala. We handle the paperwork and make sure the cargo is moving where it should go. My staff and I drink a lot of tea while we wait for updates from the port. It’s not the kind of job you see in movies, it’s mostly just checking numbers and talking to captains or agents. We try to keep things moving as fast as the sea allows. The fans hum all day and the light from the street comes in through the dusty windows. It’s our workspace and we like it, even with the noise from the road and the constant stacks of files.
