Fairle Place is one of those spots in Kolkata that feels like stepping back a few decades. The buildings are grand but show their age, and Afp Ltd. at number 4 is no exception. Our office is a bit of a maze with high ceilings and heavy wooden doors that sometimes creak when the wind catches them. We deal with a lot of administrative work here, and the sound of typing is the constant background noise. It’s a very central location, so there’s always something happening right outside the window. You can hear the tea sellers and the various hawkers throughout the day. We don't have a lot of modern bells and whistles. Our filing system is mostly physical, and we have rows of cabinets that take up most of one wall. Sometimes it takes a minute to find exactly what you're looking for, but we usually know which drawer to check. The staff here has been together for a long time, so we’ve developed our own ways of doing things that might not make sense to an outsider. We share snacks in the afternoon, and there’s always a bit of gossip about what’s happening in the building. It’s a comfortable place to work, even if it gets a bit drafty during the winter months. We like the history of the area and the fact that we’re right in the middle of everything.
