Our workshop is at Plot No. 22 in the Major Industrial Estate at S. Kalamassery. Indway Furniture Manufacturing Company Pvt. Ltd. is where we spend our hours among the smell of wood and the sound of saws. Being in an industrial estate means we are surrounded by other people making things, so there is always a background noise of machinery and trucks. It’s not a quiet office job. We have a lot of space for our materials and the different stages of making furniture. You’ll find piles of timber, cans of finish, and tools scattered across the workbenches. We don't worry too much about keeping the floor perfectly clean while we are working because sawdust is just part of the environment. S. Kalamassery is a good location for us because it’s easy for transport, which is helpful when we are moving larger pieces of furniture out. We have a small group of workers who know their craft well. We don't sit behind desks much; we are usually on our feet. It’s a physical job and it can be tiring, especially when the weather is hot and the fans are just moving warm air around. We just focus on building things that are solid and do what they are supposed to do. It’s a straightforward way to make a living, and we’ve been at this spot for a long time.
