Rice Mill

Our place is just called Rice Mill, and we are situated in Village Thakurapada. This is in the Pubusai post area of the Khurda Tehsil. It is a very rural spot, surrounded by fields and trees. We handle the rice processing for the local farmers around this part of Khurda. The mill itself is an old building that has been here for years. It is a bit worn down, but the machinery inside still works fine. We spend our time cleaning the paddy and hulling it so the rice is ready for cooking or selling. There is a lot of manual labor involved, like stacking the heavy gunny bags and moving them around the floor. When the harvest comes in, the whole yard is full of tractors and carts waiting their turn. It is a busy time and there is not much sleep to be had. During the off-season, things are much quieter, and we spend our time maintaining the equipment. We do not have a website or any fancy marketing. People in Thakurapada just know we are here when they need us. It is a simple life and a simple business. We deal with the same people year after year, so we have become quite friendly with the local farming families. The air is usually filled with the smell of toasted rice husks, which is a smell I have known since I was a kid growing up in this village.
