Venkateswara Exports is situated at No. 41/1 on 50 Feet Road in Ramakrishanapuram. It’s a busy road with lots of trucks and vans passing by all the time. Our place is basically a large hall that we’ve divided up with some wooden partitions. One side is for packing and the other side is for the office work. We have piles of cardboard boxes everywhere, and the sound of packing tape being pulled is something you hear all day. The front door is usually kept open to let some air in, which also lets in the dust from the road. We have a few plastic chairs for when people come to visit, but most of the time we are on our feet. The walls are covered with charts and lists pinned up with thumbtacks. It’s a practical setup, meant for moving goods rather than looking pretty. The tea lady comes by twice a day, and that’s usually when we take our only real breaks. Ramakrishanapuram is a busy place, and we fit right into the hustle of the area. We’ve got a small sign painted on the wall outside so people know they’ve found the right number. We keep a stack of old newspapers to use for padding the fragile items before they go into the crates. It’s a bit of a messy process, but it works fine. There is a small temple at the corner where we usually stop for a moment before starting our day. It’s just a regular export house doing its thing.
