Kanpur is a big city with a lot of factories, but World Bank Colony in Barra feels more like a quiet community. Our place at C-489 is right in the middle of the residential blocks. We’ve been here long enough that most people know where we are. It’s a simple retail setup. We don’t spend our money on big advertisements or shiny window displays. We would rather just have the things people are actually looking for. The floor is just plain concrete and we have metal shelves that have seen better days. But they hold everything up just fine. We get people coming in all through the day. Some are in a big hurry to get home, while others want to stand around and talk about cricket or the weather. We listen to all of it because we enjoy the company. The traffic in Barra can be a real mess, especially in the late evenings. We usually stay open a bit later than we should just to catch people on their way back from work. It has a family-run kind of vibe, even if the name on the door sounds official. We handle all the heavy lifting ourselves. My back hurts some days from moving heavy crates, but that’s just the job. We keep the lights on and the doors open for whoever needs us.
