Navin Market in Kanpur is always a bit of a chaotic place, and right in the middle of all that noise is Ss Fashions. Our shop isn't very large, but we pack a lot into the space we have. Most days start with dragging the shutters up and seeing who’s already out and about in the market. We spend a lot of time unpacking boxes that arrive from the wholesalers and trying to find a place for every single shirt or pair of trousers. The dust from the street always finds its way in, so we’re constantly wiping things down. It’s a family-run kind of thing, so you might see one of us eating lunch in the back while the other helps a customer find a size that actually fits. People in Kanpur can be quite picky about their clothes, so we listen to what they like and try to keep that in stock. It’s not about being trendy for the sake of it, but just having stuff that looks decent. The fans overhead never seem to do enough when the summer heat really hits, but we just keep going. Sometimes the power goes out and we’re just sitting there in the dark chatting with whoever is in the shop. It’s just a normal way of living and working here. We like the pace of the market and the way everyone knows everyone else’s business.
