Knitwell Industries

Knitwell Industries is out at F-47 on Road No-6 in Panki Site-5. It’s a proper industrial area in Kanpur, so there aren't many trees or quiet spots around here. Everything is grey and concrete. Our building is a basic shed with a high tin roof that makes a lot of noise when it rains. Road No-6 is usually full of trucks loading and unloading goods. Inside our unit, the knitting machines are the main feature. They are loud and they run for most of the day. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear a nice suit. There is lint in the air and oil on the floor near the machines. We have a small corner walled off with plywood that serves as the office. It has one old computer and a lot of box files. We don't have a fancy logo on the wall or a water cooler. We just bring our bottles from home. Most of the workers have been with us for a long time, so we all know how the machines act up and how to fix them. It’s a lot of physical work, standing on your feet and making sure the yarn doesn't get tangled. We get the job done and head home when the shift ends. It’s just an honest day's work in a tough environment. The Panki area is always dusty, but we have gotten used to it over the years.
