Brd Inter College sits right along SH 46 in Gausganj, which is on the outskirts of Kanpur. Being on the state highway means there is always the sound of trucks and buses passing by. It’s a school that serves the local farming families and workers in the area. The building is a two-story structure with a courtyard in the middle where we hold the morning assembly. You can see the students in their uniforms walking down the dusty road every morning to get here. The classrooms are basic, with desks that have been scratched over the years by many different kids. We have a small office where the principal sits, and the walls are covered with old charts and some sports trophies from years ago. The teachers are mostly local people who have lived in Gausganj their whole lives. During the monsoon, the ground gets a bit muddy, but the kids don't seem to care much. We don't have a fancy canteen, so most students bring their own tiffin boxes and eat together under the shade of the neem trees. It’s a plain, honest place where the focus is just on getting through the syllabus and helping the children pass their boards. There’s no big sign or flashing lights, just a gate and a name painted on the wall. It’s a quiet life here, mostly, except for the traffic on the highway. We just do our work and look after the students.
